Oakmont Farmers Market is Back

Oakmont Farmers Market is starting up again.

2009 OPENING DAY is ...
THIS WEDNESDAY MAY 20th at 3pm!

A note from the folks at the Farmer's Market:

As many of you know, the Haverford Township Farmers Market Association is now a real not-for-profit, and educational 501c3. This means that we are able to offer more educational programs for market patrons of all ages, from fun kid's activities to healthy eating lessons for adults and seniors. Keep an eye on this newsletter to see what the market is offering each week.

Since we are now not-for-profit, we also need a lot of help from volunteers and donors. We'll be featuring some fundraising dinners and other fun activities this year and can also accept donations for our educational activities. We also need volunteers to help out with all kinds of programs, from promotional activities to events and educational planning. Please contact us at oakmontfarmersmarket@gmail.com to sign up for an activity or the season. If you have any questions about what you can do, talk to the market managers or one of the Board of Trustees at the market - thanks!

St. Denis Fair

Hey Folks;

Just in case you didn't know (cause I didn't know till yesterday); on Saturday afternoon, the St. Denis Fair was OPEN for business. I'm sure you all know that the fair is in town - just driving down Eagle Road will hip you to that - but I never knew it was OPEN on Saturday afternoons. The perfect time to take the kids and have some great family fun.

The Mrs & I took our four year old son around 4:00pm. The lines for the rides were short, the food was great, and - as the saying goes - a good time was had by all. I mean, there's nothing like a two foot tall HULK to keep the little man smiling.

For the grown-ups; after going twenty years on the M.I.A. list, "Contribution Hall" is back. For those of you who are unaware of of that fine establishment, "Contribution Hall" is located inside the St. Denis gym - and you are more than welcome to come on in (18 and over) and try your luck at the many games of chance that are up and running.

The fair will be up and running through next weekend. And, if you got some young ones, you really can't beat a Saturday afternoon at The Fun Fair!

Contemplating K-9 police dogs in Haverford

HAVERFORD TWP — Commissioners will meet with Police Chief Carmen Pettine next week to explore the feasibility of adding a K-9 unit to the police department.

Speaking at Monday’s workshop meeting, Township Manager Larry Gentile said that a K-9 unit requires a significant financial commitment. However, Gentile confirmed that grant money is available, and the township could potentially obtain enough funding to purchase the dogs and training.

Manpower is also an issue, however, since officers in the program would require six to nine months of training.

A K-9 supporter, Vice President Stephen D’Emilio said police officers he’s spoken with “think it’s a good tool,” especially when dealing with criminals who may attempt to elude police in wooded areas and backyards.

D’Emilio also noted that a positive alert from a trained narcotics detection dog gives police reasonable suspicion/probable cause to search a vehicle.

Commissioner Larry Holmes, however, wasn’t convinced that dogs are needed:
“Other than hearing a couple of commissioners say it would be great if we had a dog, I don’t recall the police identifying a lack in the department of the ability to do the job because they’re missing a K-9 unit.”

Holmes said he wanted to be clear on “what we’re not doing because we don’t have a K-9 unit.”

While these dogs are capable of great things, “It’s a huge expense and huge manpower commitment. We do need to ask the hard questions,” Holmes said.

Commissioner Mario Oliva, who arranged the meeting, said Pettine would provide a demonstration, answers to questions, and a feasibility study so that commissioners can make an informed decision
